VGC 20 Relevant Speed Tiers

Relevant Speed Tiers for VGC 20

UPDATED FOR SERIES 3 AND POKEMON HOME! on 03-13-20

I am making this with no disrespect to Trainertower. I think they post a lot of good information and articles, but I believe their Speed Tier list is not very useful as it includes too many Pokemon, even if they are not used very much (https://www.trainertower.com/vgc20-speed-tiers/). I will be copying their info but weeding out the non-relevant stuff. And it includes the same Pokemon many times in different ways, such as its speed in certain settings or a certain nature when I don't believe that it is often relevant. Tailwind is relevant with mons that can with few or no investment reach 107 for Dragapult or 113 for outspeeding Vileplume. Also relevant for the 178 and 167 benchmarks (Gengar and Charizard Base Speeds).

You should be assuming worst case scenario (Speed increasing nature) and most common scenarios and not too focus on every little tiny possibility. This kind of focus makes you not laser-like focused on what you need to be focused on, which is on the relevant stuff, rather than making your team beat things that are very unlikely with losing track of what is likely to be used. Abilities like Swift Swim or Chlorophyll I will include both for, because it is important to know that you can outspeed say Ludicolo by switching in opposing weather to cancel out rain. It is also important to know what speed they can reach in Rain, as this is a common strategy.

This guide will be based on usage from the top75 or so mons I consider to be relevant based on usage stats, not necessarily how good the Pokemon are. If a mon is rarely used then I consider it to be non-relevant, no matter how good it may be. Unfortunately the usage stats are kind of old and doesn't take into account guessing what people will use in the future, so for a tournament you need to think about this. Speed stats are also useful to know  for your own team at times even if it isn't speed-raising nature.

I skipped a lot of mons below 107 uninvested neutral nature speed unless they are slow enough for Trick Room. Slow enough for TR to me means too slow for tailwind, but also is slower than most random mons that are goodstuffs and don't typically raise their speed for tailwind. So that stat is around 78 for the uninvested Scrafty. Usually though you want Rhyperior or lower speed for TR teams though. Uninvested is in general not useful information unless it is the most common EV spread. Bold means Important Speed Benchmarks. Also many mons are not included that would be important to outspeed other mons with +1 or other relevant boosts from Max Airstream. With that said, let's begin by listing the speeds:

PS: this was published on 01-02-20 but I had to change the date so it would come after my main teambuilding guide

VGC 19 Ultra Series

Ultra Series:

Here is a link to me going over my blog in depth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKLBUv-co10&list=UU3ORlYRId0bJta0VPXA7l0w&index=1

Good Links to Usage Stats: https://www.smogon.com/stats/2019-04/moveset/gen7vgc2019ultraseries-1760.txt and https://vgcstats.com/#/ also Trainertower.com

Teambuilding:

1.  Xerneas Counter: Steel Type(Bronzong/Ferro/Lucario-Mega/Staka)/PoisonType (Amoonguss/Crobat/Nihilego), Haze, etc. Gengar-Mega is somewhat fragile and is a special attacker so it isn't a consistent Xern counter.
2. Weather Counters:
    -  Weather Change: Kyogre/Groudon/RolePlay/SkillSwap/etc. and
    -  Kyogre Counter: Groudon/Wide Guard/Koko/Ferro/Xern, etc. and
    -  Ray Counter: SupportedXern/Intimidate/Koko/Zapdos/Lele/Bronzong/Cress/Mence-Mega
3. Trick Room/Tailwind/Geomancy/etc. + < 85 speed mon for TR (Speed Control)
4. Powder Control:
    - Spore Counters: Koko/Fini/Faster than Smeargle Taunt/Two Grass Types/etc.
    - Xern Amoonguss Counters: Sky Drop/S. Goggles/Grasses/Spread Moves/Haze/etc.
5.  Intimidate: Incineroar/Mence-Mega, etc (Optional)
6. Two Restricted
7. One or more Z moves
10. Mega (Optional)
11. If using Ogre use Skill Swap/Ray or something similar with it
12. Probably avoid 2 special restricted because of Snarl.

Use Pyrotoz.com/https://richi3f.github.io/pokemon-team-planner/ for the rest

Test:

1. All the Megas
2. Scrafty
3. Palkia
4. Celesteela
5. Mega Medicham
6. Hitmontop
7.

*These Tiers are made for Showdown/Bo1 and are in A-Z order NOT ranked by number!*

Tiers Explained:

High Tier = Usable mons

Medium Tier = Mons not quite usable but are decently good overall and may be in Limbo

Low Tier - Mons never usable and are bad overall

High Tier:

Restricted:

1. Groudon-Primal - Weak to Ray Ogre/Skill Swap + Primal Rain
2. Lunala - Doesn't Ohko much, easily walled sometimes, not fast enough, countered too hard by Persian or Yveltal
3. Xerneas

Mega:

1. Gengar-Mega
2. Kangashan-Mega
3. Salamence-Mega

Regular:

1. Amoonguss
2. Bronzong
3. Cresselia
4. Crobat
5. Ditto
6. Incineroar
7. Nihilego
8. Smeargle
9. Tapu Fini
10. Tapu Lele
11. Stakataka
12. Nagandel
13. Tapu Koko - Too much lightningrod
14. Celesteela

Niche Combos: Shedinja + Soak

Medium Tier:

Restricted:

1. Dialga - Dialga teams are too weak to Groudon (weather war or defensively)
2. Ho-Oh - Has good resists, but has a few weaks, not good vs Ogre in TR or TW teams
3.  Kyogre-Regular - Primal Groudon walls it if no ray and more for Bo1
4.  Kyogre-Primal - Relies too much on speed control and Rayquaza/Skill Swap
5. Yveltal - Good w/ Gengar Ogre teams, but bad offensive typing and non-versatile, Xern weak
6. Zekrom - Good vs some archetypes but is OHKO'd by Xern and weak to Groudon also doesn't Ohko Ray
7. Rayquaza - needs Ogre and not everyone uses Groudon
8. Necrozma-Ultra - Can't use the Z move first turn, have to use Dawn Wings most likely for MGB, lacks coverage vs some mons, bad defensive typing, requires Psychic Terrain support, Physical one is bad also but at least isn't weak to Xern - too fast in TR though. Good for being able to use two different typings and evolve at unexpected times.

Mega:

1.
2.
3. Lucario-Mega
4. Metagross-Mega
5. Rayquaza (Mega + Restricted)

Regular:

1. Umbreon - Weak offensively and slow, a niche pick vs Lunala or some other teams
2. Landorus-T - too many ground resists
3. Persian - Not offensive enough
4. Tsareena - Weak to Ray, not great offensively, and Kyogre combo can't work well due to primal weather
5. Volcarona - too much Ogre and Ray now
6. Aegislash - either going to be not bulky enough without pinch or not offensive enough without Z]
7. Breloom - Too much fini/koko now
8. Raichu - Too weak defensively and offensively, usually Togedemaru is better, Z move is OK
9. Goth - Shadow Tag has potential but Goth is inferior to Bronzong's defensive typing and offense
10. Ferrothorn - It would be high tier if its moves were more accurate.
11. Araquanid - Slow and mostly hits with water moves, but Entrainment is good.
12. Zapdos - Lightningrod makes it Medium Tier esp. since it uses a Z move on the team.
13. Togedemaru - Poor offensive potential and low bulk

Niche Combos: Whim + Terrakion,

Low Tier:

1. Drifblim - Not enough power
2. Ludicolo - not very offensive outside of Rain
3. Kommo-O - Not bulky enough, too much damage from attacks and Fairies
4. Mega Gyarados - Doesn't work since Needs Ray and two megas don't work well together
5. Reshiram - Blue Flare Misses and the game is more offensive now
6. Top - Having only a fighting move as an attacking move is meh and too many things that super affect it.
7. Togekiss - Weak Offense.
8. Thundy-I - Twave and Swagger got nerfed hard.
9. P2 - TR users need Skill Swap or Role Play
10. Accelgor - If they got higher HP it makes it pretty much not a good pick.
11. Pert-mega - Most teams use Groudon or Rayquaza which nullify its ability.
12. Talonflame - Not powerful in general and Gale Wings nerf ruined it.
13. Tapu Bulu - Too many mons resist and super affect it.
14. Thundurus-T - Usually outclassed by Koko unless your terrain is overrided or you need to wall Ground moves.
15. Toxicroak - Too many mons super affect or do a lot of damage to it, it does little damage in general, and primal groudon is used too much.
16. Necrozma-DM - Bad defensive typing and poor offense
17. Solgaleo - Bad defensive typing and poor offense
18. Gastrodon - weak offensively and only good for using it like a Sheddy vs Ogre and OK vs TR
19. Tornadus - It only has a flying move for offense and it dies too easily.
20. Manectric-Mega - Could be high-tier if Electric mons are common
21. Mew2 X - Mewtwo is medium tier and Y is comparable to Life Orb Mewtwo regular except with a fighting STAB and Atk is usually useless on it.
22. Mew2 Y - Mewtwo is medium tier and Y is comparable to Life Orb Mewtwo regular except with higher bulk and speed.
23. Salazzle - Outclassed by Nihilego or Naganadel and doesn't hit hard enough or super affect enough
24. Kart - Ohko'd by almost everything and doesn't OHKO much, outsped by Mence and other mons
25. Mawile-Mega - Relies on TR, got nerfed hard, and weak defenses and typing
26. Oranguru - doesn't resist much, maybe outclassed by other TR mons, has no good attacking moves
27.

The rest of the mons should likely go by the Sun/Moon tier list.

Good Cores:

1. Yveltal Ogre Gengar Staka
2. Ray Ogre Incin Fini Togedemaru
3. Xern Groudon Incin
4. X-Ray

I recommend every team to have: 1. A way to change the Weather so that you disrupt them and likely reduce their damage and/or accuracy.  2. ...
